Ecodunia’s Journey: Building Sustainable Bags and Jewelry With African Artisans
Cera MuchiriSustainable shopping isn’t just a trend; it’s a demand for fairness, dignity, and transparency. Yet many women still struggle to find ethical bags and handmade jewelry that truly empower artisans instead of exploiting them. This gap has fueled fast fashion while leaving talented craftspeople behind. Ecodunia was created to change that. From a small Nairobi workshop to a growing team of artisans, our journey reflects resilience, community, and purpose. In this article, you’ll read how sustainable bags and hand-forged jewelry are made, the lives they impact, and how choosing fair-trade products makes everyday fashion meaningful.
From an Idea to a Movement: The Beginning of Ecodunia
Ecodunia began with a dream carried by founder Cera Muchiri, who grew up in rural Kenya. At just nine years old, her grandmother’s farm was burned during civil conflict, forcing her family into the Nairobi slums. Watching her mother walk two hours daily to a low-wage job, Cera understood the hardship that comes when opportunity is scarce.
Later, while studying international development and entrepreneurship at UCLA, she sharpened her vision: her community didn’t need charity; they needed sustainable work. In 2019, she returned to Kenya and founded Ecodunia. What began as a small workshop with three people has now grown to a team of nearly 20, including artisans, a chef, marketing staff, a shipping manager, a photographer, and more.
Sustainable Bags: Craftsmanship Rooted in Ethics
At the heart of Ecodunia are our sustainable bags, handmade in Nairobi using locally sourced and fair-trade materials. Each ethically handmade bag, either a leather bag, canvas bag, or vegan leather bag, reflects the skill and dedication of African artisans in Kenya who hand-cut, hand-stitch, and assemble with precision.
- Canvas Tote Bags and Crossbody Bags – Made from durable 100% fair-trade cotton canvas, reinforced with genuine leather handles, these totes and crossbody bags are built for both everyday wear and long-lasting strength.
- Vegan Leather Bags – Crafted from eco-friendly alternatives, these designs cater to women seeking a stylish, cruelty-free choice.
- Travel and Work Bags – Spacious, practical, and stylish, these bags are designed for women balancing work, travel, and lifestyle needs.
Each product blends modern utility with African artistry, proving that sustainable design doesn’t have to compromise on function or beauty.
Hand-Forged Jewelry: Strength in Metal, Stories in Design
Beyond eco-friendly bags, Ecodunia has expanded into hand-forged brass jewelry, created by artisans in the slums of Kibera, Nairobi-Kenya. Using recycled and upcycled brass, these pieces celebrate African heritage while promoting sustainability.
Our jewelry collections include:
- Rings – Adjustable handmade brass rings designed for both women and men.
- Cuff Bracelets and Bangles – Bold and timeless designs, hammered and polished by hand.
- Unique Earrings – Lightweight yet elegant styles crafted to showcase artisan detail.
Each piece of brass jewelry is more than an accessory; it’s a symbol of resilience, turning raw, reclaimed material into wearable art.
The Human Impact: Stories of Change
Behind every bag and bracelet is a human story. Ecodunia is more than a workplace—it’s a community. By employing artisans and staff in Nairobi’s Eastlands, the brand offers much more than just wages:
- Free daily meals – Every team member receives three nutritious meals a day, easing the burden of food insecurity.
- Health insurance – Employees and their families are supported with healthcare coverage, a rarity in many Kenyan workshops.
- Retirement savings – Through contributions to NSSF (National Social Security Fund), artisans save for their future with dignity.
- Diverse job creation – Today, the team includes not just artisans but also a chef, a workshop manager, a shipping manager, marketers, and creative professionals like photographers and videographers.
These benefits create stability, allowing each worker to focus on their craft, support their family, and dream bigger for their future.

Scaling the Vision: From 20 to 500
Ecodunia’s ambition doesn’t stop here. Our vision is to grow from today’s 20-person team to over 500 artisans and staff, creating dignified work opportunities across Kenya and Africa. This scale will allow us to expand sustainable bag production, jewelry collections, and wholesale opportunities while continuing to strengthen local communities.
By investing in people, materials, and fair trade, Ecodunia aims to set a global standard for sustainable fashion rooted in dignity and empowerment.
Why Ethical Shopping Matters More Than Ever
The choices we make as consumers shape industries. Fast fashion thrives on cheap labor and environmental harm, but ethical shopping disrupts that cycle. By choosing sustainable tote bags, crossbody bags, or brass jewelry from Ecodunia, you are:
- Supporting fair wages and safe conditions for artisans.
- Preserving traditional African craftsmanship.
- Encouraging eco-friendly practices with recycled and fair-trade materials.
- Investing in a product designed to last for years, not months.
Your everyday fashion choices have the power to create ripple effects far beyond your closet.
A Journey Shared With You
Ecodunia’s story is still being written. From Cera’s childhood in rural Kenya to today’s thriving workshop, the journey has always been about people, those who create and those who choose to shop ethically. Every bag and piece of jewelry carries the imprint of resilience, hope, and artistry.
By supporting Ecodunia, you are not just buying a tote or bracelet; you are investing in a future where 500 artisans can thrive with dignity. Together, we are proving that sustainable fashion is possible, powerful, and deeply human.
